![]() The most immediate impact is the inclusion of a whole suite of post-release content updates for the game, including a ‘never-ending’ dungeon crawl mode (complete with its own story sequences to discover) and a very fun multiplayer mode - allowing Selene to jump through space and time and sync up with other players, assisting them on their quest to escape Atropos. So what’s changed for those coming to PC for the first time? I ended up dumping a furious 40 hours into the game at release, finally unlocking the game’s secret second ending after many, many challenging attempts to triumph over the game’s extremely difficult final biome. When Returnal first crash landed in 2021, I was immediately hooked - I wanted to discover all of Atropos’ secrets, understand Selene’s motivations and figure out the core of what was really taking place in the story. There are a lot of nods to the beloved Metroid Prime series throughout Returnal the way Selene will stop to scan alien devices echoes Samus’ own scientific eye toward cataloging the creatures and lands of Tallon IV.Īs Selene explores the world, she’ll discover new equipment and gear allowing her to reach new locations and areas previously inaccessible in prior runs, an echo of the way in which classic Metroid games have you back-tracking and digging through its map. ![]() While Selene is hunted by vicious creatures, automatons - she does so entirely by herself and it’s hard not to draw an immediate comparison to another game about a stranded space adventurer trying to navigate an empty, alien planet. ![]() Its empty ruins tell stories of a collapsed alien empire whose mysteries may never truly be resolved. Its plant-life responds to your presence, twisting and moving and glowing as Selene gets too close. Just under two years later, Returnal makes its debut on the PC platform allowing a new collection of players to experience its white-knuckle combat and experience the story of Selene, the lost space-pilot who finds herself trapped in a cycle of death and rebirth on the alien world of Atropos.Ītropos is a suffocating place. It was an uncompromising experience a meshing of tough-as-nails roguelike dungeon crawling, first-person surrealist horror setpieces and the lonely atmospheric exploration of a good Metroidvania. When RETURNAL first launched on the PlayStation 5 in 2021, it created a flurry of conversation about its difficult combat, moody exploration and alien environments.

![]() It was entitled, ‘Cockney Stoic or Camden Town Kids Don’t Cry’.Īlthough I’d said I’d think about it, I had no intention of writing a blog post. Nevinson’s 1940 painting captured the Blitz spirit. I felt washed out and that my mascara had suffered (and also hugely moved but never mind about that) so I invoked my humour immediately “You’ll be interested in this,” I said, “I just wept freely in an archive.” “Write us a blog post,” Rhodri said.Ĭ. When I left the British Library (where the unfortunate incident took place) that day I bumped into Rhodri Hayward from the Centre for the History of the Emotions. The colonial period (1895-1945) which lasted for a half century had its fair share of resistance from the local people and the colonial power was guilty of a great many atrocities, however the general feeling today is that people of this country share a strong bond with the Japanese and enjoy a friendship that despite a troubled history is based off of mutual understanding and respect for each other. Unfortunately history has shown that things didn't exactly turn out that way for some of Japan's other colonies. Taiwan's experience under Japanese colonial rule is considered to be a bit tamer than that of neighbouring countries as the regime sought to transform the island into a " model colony" and develop the islands infrastructure and economy as well as provide a modern education to the people living here.Īs Taiwan was Japan's first colony, the Japanese Empire wanted to show the world that being under Japanese control wasn't such a terrible thing and that the people of Taiwan would only benefit from becoming a part of the empire. The bitter memory of that era is still felt today throughout Asia and a day doesn't go by that Japan isn't reminded of the horrific atrocities that were committed during that period. ![]() These dorms, which hide in plain site are over a century old and are a reminder the Japanese colonial period - a very different era in Taiwanese history.Ī lot can be said about the crimes committed by the Japanese Empire leading up to the Second World War. ![]() ![]() You might think police dormitories don't really sound all that interesting or important historically, but I hope I can convince you otherwise. I feel quite lucky however that before any of these changes took place that I took the initiative to figure out what these beautiful little buildings were that were hidden from the general public for the past few decades. My post today is from a location of historical importance which sits (somewhat) hidden within the heart of downtown Zhongli and while many people may not even know it exists, big things are about to happen and these amazing pieces of local history which have been left to decay are about to receive a make-over giving them the honour and recognition that they deserve. Having him around and telling me stories about places that I feel I really should have known about forced me to reevaluate the way I look at the area I live in and Taiwan as a whole! The problem with that however is that after a few years I became too comfortable living here and basically stopped exploring as I had mistakenly assumed that I'd seen everything.Ī few months ago, my friend and fellow blogger Alexander Synaptic moved into town for a short time and really opened up my eyes to the fact that I've been missing a lot of cool stuff that has sat there hidden from me in plain sight for all these years. I have called Zhongli (中壢) home since my arrival and when I think back to when I first arrived, I remember the excitement I felt about the new city I lived in. I was curious about my surroundings and I spent a lot of time at first exploring and familiarizing myself with not only the roads but the history, culture and cuisine of the area. I had just graduated from university and felt like the monotony of starting a career fresh out of school wasn't as appealing as experiencing new cultures, languages and people, yet I never would have expected that I'd be sitting in a coffeeshop in Taiwan over ten years later writing this blog. When I left Canada over a decade ago I didn't really have any long-term plans apart from travelling a bit and seeing the world. ![]() “Cnidaria” is the phylum for most jellyfish species, and “rex” means “king” in Latin. Tracks like “ Thunderhead”, “ Bleed Me”, and “ Death Comes Out to Play” are great Overkill songs, but the sound quality just isn’t there. This is unfortunate, because some of the song-writing on this album has a lot of potential. What came out the other side of these changes was “ Bloodletting”, a hastily produced album whose production is, to put it bluntly, a mess. Guitarists Joe Comeau and Sebastian Marino (who both performed on the groups 3 previous albums) were no longer in the band and, with the addition of guitarist Dave Linsk, Overkill became a 4-piece unit for the first time since 1989’s “The Years of Decay”. First, they had moved to a new label, Metal-Is, after 5 years with CMC records. The turn of the century came with a lot of changes for the band. Highlights: “ Within Your Eyes”, “ Bats in the Belfry”, “ Keeper”. There are still several songs here worth adding to your song playlist the album just is not going to win over new fans or catch the attention of anyone outside the Overkill fan-base. Just because the album is bad by Overkill standards, however, does not make it a truly bad album. Even more surprising: both “Killbox 13” and “ReliXIV” were recorded in the same studio and with the same record label. Some of these issues are a bit surprising since they are a complete 180 from the groups previous album, “Killbox 13”, which was critically acclaimed and arguably the most well-produced album of Overkill’s career. Most of us don’t even know how to pronounce the album title. “ReliXIV” is a largely uninspired, generic effort and includes no innovation. The production sounds like a demo-tape – the guitars sound like they were recorded in a trash can – and the album contains the only two Overkill songs I actively dislike (“Love” and “Old School”). It’s difficult for me to say this, because Overkill has never released a bad album, but “ ReliXIV” is the band’s worst effort to date. After grading and ranking, I re-listened to every album and took notes before deciding on a final list. Each Album was graded out of 10 points for each category (40 points total).Average Professional Review Scores (i.e.So, we decided to do our part in continuing to promote one of the greatest metal bands of all-time, by ranking all of their albums! Here is a list of the non-construction new employer tax rates for each state and Washington D.C. For example, the SUTA tax rates in Alabama range from 0.65% – 6.8% in 2023. Your state will assign you a rate within this range. Generally, states have a range of unemployment tax rates for established employers. Most states send employers a new SUTA tax rate each year. You may receive an updated SUTA tax rate within one year or a few years. Your state will eventually change your new employer rate. If you live in a state that doesn’t use a standard new employer rate, you must wait for your state to assign you your starting rate. For example, all new employers receive a SUTA rate of 1.25% in Nebraska, and all new construction employers receive a SUTA rate of 5.4% in 2023. Some states split new employer rates up by construction and non-construction industries. The state unemployment insurance rate for new employers varies. Your tax rate might be based on factors like your industry, how many former employees received unemployment benefits, and experience. Each state sets a different range of tax rates. State unemployment tax is a percentage of an employee’s wages. However, some states (Alaska, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania) require that you withhold additional money from employee wages for state unemployment taxes (SUTA tax). Generally, unemployment taxes are employer-only taxes, meaning you do not withhold the tax from employee wages. These taxes fund unemployment programs and pay out benefits to employees who lose their jobs through no fault of their own.
